What is Action Learning?

Action Learning is an approach to solving real problems that involves taking action and reflecting upon the results.
Action Learning helps improve the problem-solving process as well as the solutions the team develops.
Action Learning has been demonstrated to be very effective in developing a number of individual leadership and team problem solving skills (Leonard and Marquardt, 2010) and is ideal for individuals, groups and organisations dealing with complex subject matter such as young people, serious group or youth violence, troubled families, sexual exploitation or deprived communities because it draws on reflective process.to continually build ability in problem solving.
Complex problems require many skills, so individual team members can develop a customised learning agenda for themselves. This strategy is quite different from the "one size fits all" curriculum that is characteristic of many training and development programs that tend to only have small or short-term success.
Action Learning is fun, interactive and builds upon a range of skills for all involved. The feedback from our clients to date have been phenomenal

Purpose of Action Learning

Action learning has three mutually reinforcing purposes:
- To make useful progress on a problem or opportunity in an organisation; to make things happen.
- To help the individual themselves to find out how to deal, in future, with other such serious or complex problems; to help them to learn how to learn.
- To help those responsible for the development of people in the organisation to see their role afresh; that is to help people create the conditions in which they can learn with and from each other in pursuit of a common task
How Can Action Learning Benefit You?
Action Learning benefit organisations and individuals in a number of different ways:
- By helping to address perplexing problems that have previously seemed insoluble
- Work with the most vulnerable and challenging becomes increasingly dependant on the skills and expertise of staff. Action Learning helps organisations to use the potential of their staff better
- Helping individuals to learn with and from others by discussing the difficulties each member of the action learning set experiences while working on an important issue.
- Benefiting individuals by increasing their capacity to deal with complex and confusing challenges.

What You Will Need to Make It Work?

In order to establish an Action Learning Sets effectively there should be about six to eight individuals charged to address the issues. The membership of the group depends on the common problem. In a single-project approach, the member would likely be from the same business unit, working on the same projects or priorities. However, the more diverse the values, opinions and perspectives of the members, the more unbiased, probing and generative might be the questions and solutions shared among members - and, thus, the more learning generated.
In single-company Action Learning, all members are from the same company, and sometimes they work on the same business function or project (they are an intact team). In multi-company (or multi-department) Action Learning, each member is from a different company or department.
We don't advise Action Learning Sets to consist of both managers and their direct lines of supervision staff to consist within a same set Action Learning Set as it fosters an open, non-judgemental arena. All Action Learning Sets require a level of confidentiality.
